“Spring is Sprung – How to be Green and Caring”
To wrap up our series and in preparation for a new season of renewal - answers to all your
questions about things green - this time trees and plants. We love nature, especially our
gardens. They reminds us of the analogy between healthy ecosystems and healthy societies.
To be a gardener is to be a special kind of leader - gently shaping and nurturing with deep
empathy and intelligence. And caring for nature is surely the beginning of caring for each other
so everyone can thrive instead of a struggle between ‘winners’ and ‘losers’.
Our Speakers:
Robin Reilly manages a hobby farm - Black River Forest Garden - and has a Masters Degree in Landscape Architecture with a specialization in land restoration and organic gardening. For many years, Robin was Superintendent of Sandbanks Provincial Park.
Ben O'Brien is the owner of Wild by Design, a landscape design business specializing
in artfully crafted, richly planted, lovingly tended naturalistic gardens.
Jennifer Gagné works at the Nature Conservancy of Canada as a conservation
biology coordinator and does conservation planning and stewardship work for the
Napanee Plain and Eastern Lake Ontario Coast Natural Areas.

Biodiversity in Prince Edward County Talk with Sheila McKay Kuja.
Learn about the special nature of Prince Edward County that makes it so important to biodiversity.
Many Species at Risk thrive here because of the relative health of our aquatic and terrestrial habitats. PEC’s geography at the intersection of northern and southern ecozones and its location in Lake Ontario combine to provide refuge for migrating birds, bats and butterflies. The limestone bedrock with minimal soil cover provides a habitat for endangered plants such as the Four Leaved Milkweed. Other Species at Risk that occur here are fish such as the Endangered Eastern Sand Darter, reptiles such as the Endangered Spiny Softshell Turtle and birds such as the Endangered Red-headed Woodpecker. Oak-hickory forests, sand dunes and alvars add to the complement of unusual species and communities in the County.
Sheila McKay Kuja grew up in Scarborough. Following undergraduate and graduate work at University of Toronto, she worked for the Natural Heritage Information Centre in North York and moved to the County as a full-time resident in 2011. Sheila became a member of PECFN joining the Executive, just in time to help with the fight against Wind Turbine development at Ostrander Point Crown Land Block. She volunteered at Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory and organized the PECFN Chimney Swift surveys. In 2014 she began coordinating the annual PEC BioBlitzes and is planning this year’s blitz at Green Point Escarpment Forests.

Sunday Service with Special Guest, Larry Tayler.
Guest Speaker, Larry Tayler. Grief and Transformation: The Presence of Absence.
If you have never heard Larry Tayler speak, you are in for an incredible experience. Larry Tayler has given many inspiring talks at St. Andrew’s that are always profound, beautiful and transforming.
His theme this year is "Transforming Grief - A Memoir about the Presence of Absence." It's an overview about the process of grief and how it can be a transformative experience. It's also influenced by my understandings of Welsh spirituality. I'll be speaking for about 35 minutes as part of the weekly St. Andrew's service.

“What is money and why austerity can never work”
Conventional economics tells us there is no difference between you, me and the Federal
government. We all need to balance our budgets. But what if the Federal government creates
our money? Why then should it be bound by the same rules of household finance? In 1995 the
Chrétien government slashed spending, raised taxes and cut transfers to the provinces - and
in Ontario, Mike Harris downloaded to municipalities. The upshot was lower government
spending, more household debt, and plummeting household savings. Other countries did the
same and it all culminated in the Great Financial Crash and a deep recession. Today, after
COVID, we are once again hearing calls for austerity and high interest rates. Are these really a
solution to Canada’s economic ills or are there alternatives?
Our Speaker:
Mario Seccareccia is Professor Emeritus at the University of Ottawa where he had been
teaching economics since 1978, including visiting professorships in France and Mexico. He
has published 130 academic articles, edited peer-reviewed international journals and has
authored or edited over a dozen books. He is also a research associate at the Canadian
Centre for Policy Alternatives. Among recent recognitions, he received a Medal from the
Canadian Senate and the 2021 John Kenneth Galbraith Prize in Economics. Since retiring, he
has actively lobbied for a Bank of Canada multi-goal mandate, including full employment and a
more equitable distribution of income.
