“The Future of Farming”
Farming is one of the most adaptable of human enterprises. In the County - from “Barley Days”
to canning to dairy to cash crops - all driven by changing demand, transportation, and
technology. And what does the future hold? As the climate crisis breaks, land is paved over,
and agriculture is financialized, what is the future for young farmers?
Our Speakers:
John Thompson is a celebrated farmer - recently inducted into the Quinte Regional
Agricultural Hall of Fame and President of PEC’s Federation of Agriculture. John is a
strong supporter of Canada’s supply management system and protecting farming as a
viable way of life.
Jane Thompson, a Toronto girl, is also an inductee into the Agricultural Hall of Fame
for her work in educating non-farmers about the life and business of farming - in
classroom programs, as agricultural contributor for 99.3 FM, and as a 4-H community
leader for over 35 years.
Martin Straadhof is Executive Director of the Ontario Farmland Trust, a charitable
organization with a mission to protect our food producing landscapes. With a loss of
320 acres per day, it is critical that we protect farming for future generations.
