In many places in the world, history is a big business. We have lots and lots of County history. But we are not making any money from it. And we are going to soon need to find new revenue sources for the County’s many special heritage spaces as the small, volunteer groups currently maintaining these properties age and begin to fail.
Prince Edward County has eight museums, 10 churches in Picton alone, over 100 cemeteries, 11 town halls, and multiple volunteer groups struggling to preserve our special places. There are limits to volunteerism. We will soon reach that limit.
Can we explore an alternative approach to the traditional volunteer, charitable model based on grants and donations? Can we transform our history into a significant community business retailing locally-made products, services and experiences to visitors?
